Record Opium Poppy Cultivation in Afghanistan & The Growing Heroin Epidemic in the US

The total area under cultivation was about 224,000 hectares (553,500 acres) in 2014, a seven percent increase on last year, according to the Afghanistan Opium Survey released by the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC).

Ultimately new government policies and regulations were promulgated at the federal, state, county and local levels of government in an effort to curtail the growing epidemic which simultaneously created a reduction in heroin supply and a corresponding increase in the price of heroin on the streets of America.
