Report: More men get economic boost from marriage

black weddingHistorically, marriage was the surest route to financial security for women. Nowadays it's men who are increasingly getting the biggest economic boost from tying the knot, according to a new analysis of census data.
The changes, summarized in a Pew Research Center report being released Tuesday, reflect the proliferation of working wives over the past 40 years — a period in which American women outpaced men in both education and earnings growth. A larger share of today's men, compared with their 1970 counterparts, are married to women whose education and income exceed their own, and a larger share of women are married to men with less education and income.
"From an economic perspective, these trends have contributed to a gender role reversal in the gains from marriage," wrote the report's authors, Richard Fry and D'Vera Cohn.  Read More…

FDA Concerned Over BPA (bisphenol-A)

By DENISE GRADY

In a shift of position, the Food and Drug Administration is expressing concerns about possible health risks from bisphenol-A, or BPA, a widely used component of plastic bottles and food packaging that it declared safe in 2008.

The agency said Friday that it had “some concern about the potential effects of BPA on the brain, behavior and prostate gland of [boy] fetuses, infants and children,” and would join other federal health agencies in studying the chemical in both animals and humans.  Read more...

Turning King’s Dream into a Nightmare

By Chris Hedges

MLK and Malcolm XMartin Luther King Day has become a yearly ritual to turn a black radical into a red-white-and-blue icon. It has become a day to celebrate ourselves for “overcoming” racism and “fulfilling” King’s dream. It is a day filled with old sound bites about little black children and little white children that, given the state of America, would enrage King. Most of our great social reformers, once they are dead, are kidnapped by the power elite and turned into harmless props of American glory. King, after all, was not only a socialist but fiercely opposed to American militarism and acutely aware, especially at the end of his life, that racial justice without economic justice was a farce.  Read more...

Why the US Owes Haiti Billions

by Bill Quigley

Why does the US owe Haiti Billions? Colin Powell, former US Secretary of State, stated his foreign policy view as the "Pottery Barn rule." That is - "if you break it, you own it."
The US has worked to break Haiti for over 200 years. We owe Haiti. Not charity. We owe Haiti as a matter of justice. Reparations. And not the $100 million promised by President Obama either - that is Powerball money. The US owes Haiti Billions - with a big B.
The US has worked for centuries to break Haiti. The US has used Haiti like a plantation. The US helped bleed the country economically since it freed itself, repeatedly invaded the country militarily, supported dictators who abused the people, used the country as a dumping ground for our own economic advantage, ruined their roads and agriculture, and toppled popularly elected officials. The US has even used Haiti like the old plantation owner and slipped over there repeatedly for sexual recreation.  Read more...

IRS Commissioner Doesn’t File Own Taxes: Too Complex

By Bob Cusack

IRS Commissioner Douglas Shulman does not file his own taxes in part because he believes the tax code is complex.

During an interview on C-SPAN’s “Newsmakers” program that aired on Sunday, Shulman said he uses a tax preparer for his own returns.

“I’ve used one for years. I find it convenient. I find the tax code complex so I use a preparer,” Shulman said.

Pressed on how he would make the tax code simpler, Shulman responded, “I don’t write the tax laws. Congress writes the tax laws so that’s a whole different discussion.”  Read more...

WELCOME TO PRISON-PRONE AMERICA

by Carolyn Bennett

"American primary and secondary schools fail to educate because that is not their function, Dmitry Orlov writes. "Their function is to institutionalize children at an early age." In due course inmates of the U.S. education enterprise "will go on to other institutions - jails, psychiatric hospitals, the military."

"… There is a reason why jails, hospitals and schools are often architecturally indistinguishable: they are but different parts of the same system, representing different phases of the institutionalization life cycle."

“Bush Was Responsible for Destroying Haitian Democracy”–Randall Robinson on Obama Tapping Bush to Co-Chair US Relief Efforts

Randall-robinsonRANDALL ROBINSON: Of course, President Bush was responsible for destroying Haitian democracy in 2004, when he and American forces abducted President Aristide and his wife, taking them off to Africa, and they are now in South Africa. President Clinton has largely sponsored a program of economic development that supports the idea of sweatshops. Haitians in Haiti today make 38 cents an hour. They don’t make a high enough wage to pay for their lunch and transportation to and from work. But this is the kind of economic program that President Clinton has supported. I think that is sad, that these two should be joined in this kind of effort. It sends, I think, the wrong kind of signal. But that is not what we should focus on now. We should focus on saving lives.

But in the last analysis, I hope that American media will not just continue to—the refrain of Haiti being the poorest country in the western hemisphere, but will come to ask the question, why? What distinguishes Haiti from the rest of the Caribbean? Why are the other countries, like the country in which I live, Saint Kitts, middle-income and successful countries, and Haiti is mired in economic despair? What happened? And who’s had a hand in it? If Haiti has been under a series of serial dictatorship, who armed the dictators? There are other hands in Haiti’s problem. Of course Haiti is responsible for some of its own failures, but probably not principally responsible. We need to know that. We need to be told the whole story of these wonderful, resilient, courageous and industrious people. And we have not been told that. I would hope that this would be an opportunity for doing so.  Read more...

Holding Corporations Accountable for Apartheid Crimes

By Amy Goodman
A landmark class action case is under way in a New York federal court, with victims of apartheid in South Africa suing corporations that they say helped the pre-1994 regime. Among the multinational corporations are IBM, Fujitsu, Ford, GM and banking giants UBS and Barclays. The lawsuit accuses the corporations of "knowing participation in and/or aiding and abetting of the crimes of apartheid; extrajudicial killing; torture; prolonged unlawful detention; and cruel, inhuman and degrading treatment." Attorneys are seeking up to $400 billion in damages.

The late anti-apartheid activist Dennis Brutus, who died just weeks ago, is a listed plaintiff. Back in 2008, he told me that "for [the corporations], apartheid was a very good system, and it was a very profitable system." As the U.S. observes the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr.'s birthday, marks the first anniversary in office of the first African-American president and ponders the exposure of a racial gaffe spoken by Sen. Harry Reid, the issue of race is front and center, making this case timely and compelling. Read more...

U.S. poll: fewer see Obama advancing racial ties

Who Is Benjamin Fulford And What Does He Say About Haiti

I came across Benjamin Fulford during one of my research fazes. Scouring the internet looking for any kind of information that would take me outside the thinking box. At the time I came across the writings of Benjamin Fulford I was researching what was really going on in this world and what the US Government was convienantly leaving out of the media. The fluff kind of broadcasting just wasn't sitting well with me. The first article I read that Benjamin Fulford wrote was on the ultimatum issued to the Illuminati by a secret Chinese Society. They did not take kindly to the plans of the Illuminati to reduce the world population. After reading this article written by Benjamin Fulford I became very interested in what he had to say and my journey out of the rabbit hole began.

You can read the article here:

Chinese Secret Society Challenges Illuminati

Now, who is Benjamin Fulford?

In light of the recent Haiti Mass Murder I had to look up what Benjamin Fulford had to say in this regard and I came across his article on the subject. (Its in Japanese and then English).

The desperate, evil, Bush Nazis attack Haiti with a Tesla Earthquake machine

The recent earthquake in Haiti was caused by an earthquake machine using technology developed by Nicola Tesla, according to MI6. The earthquake machine is not HAARP as I have previously suggested but rather some sort of nuclear device, according to this source and a CIA source. The CIA source says an expedition sent to the epicenter of the Indonesian earthquake that triggered the tsunami found it to be totally lifeless one year later, something that could only be explained by radiation. “The oil companies won a war and got rights to the oil in that region and nobody even heard about it,” the CIA source said.
In confirmation of these comments, recently declassified documents show the US government planned to attack Japan with a tsunami towards the end of World War 2 by setting of a large explosion along an underwater fault zone.

If all this information is out here for ALL to see. Then how can black men of all nations just sit and allow themselves to be murdered by any white nation at will? How can they sit and live as paupers in their own land while those of the white nations live like Kings and Queens? Where is the warrior spirit of the African man. The African woman cannot stand on the front lines and fight this battle for black men. The time for them to stand up as warrior men is NOW. They have no time left to talk and just contemplate. They must stand up for their survival. The survival of their women and children! There is no more room for talk! Now what are you going to do black man? How are you going to change your plight for the days of debate, lecture, and talks are OVER. This is the time for action! What is your plan black man? Or will you continue to give the white nations your backs to whip? When they are telling you to your face what is planned for the nation of blacks you still close your ears.

Black Children Missing in Alarming Numbers

skip_broch Nearly 800,000 children under the age of 18 are reported missing each year in the United States, according to the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children (NCMEC). Of those reported missing, 33 percent are African-American. NCMEC Vide President Herb Jones discusses the racial disparity.
ED GORDON, host: And the reason I raise that question is as we have heard with in particular missing women, but we see this to some degree with missing children, it that the media does not as quickly or give the same kind of coverage to kids of color as they do to white children?

Mr. HERB JONES (Vice President, External Affairs, National Center for Missing and Exploited Children): We have heard that and I think in some cases that may be true. But we have to understand what the media looks for. They look for circumstances, plus they look for grassroots involvement and how to get the community involved, and understanding what the media is looking for.   Read more…

France moves closer to banning full Muslim veil

Critics argue proposed move would be violation of basic rightsImage: Faiza Silmi

'Not welcome'

President Nicolas Sarkozy opened the door to a possible ban in June, telling a parliament session in Versailles that such dress "is not welcome" in France. A parliamentary panel set to work in July on a six-month mission gathering information on the garments.

On Tuesday, the head of Sarkozy's conservative UMP party in parliament's lower house, Jean-Francois Cope, jumped the gun before the panel's report was finished, and filed draft legislation on a ban. "No one may, in spaces open to the public and on public streets, wear a garment or an accessory that has the effect of hiding the face," the draft text reads.  Read more…

‘Big’ Concerns Surround New Reality Show

t1largThe series has come under fire from bloggers and critics for being potentially exploitive of the family, whose “fat and happy” attitude has drawn comparisons to the comedic Klump family from the Eddie Murphy film “The Nutty Professor.”

“My main issue is that obesity is such a huge problem in the black community,” said Jerry Barrow, senior editor of The Urban Daily.com. “It feels like the family is just being put under a spotlight to highlight how big they are.”

Unlike the competitive nature of NBC’s “The Biggest Loser,” where producers engage personal trainers and nutritionists to assist contestants in their weight loss, the Cole family appear to be going it alone on the show.
Nancy Daniels, senior vice president of production and development for TLC, said that was a deliberate decision.

“What appealed to us about the Coles is that they are a very real and relatable family going through a very real and relatable issues that many American families face,” said Daniels, who added that the Coles’ case is extreme, given the large amount of weight they want to shed. “They were at a crossroads in their lives and deciding they needed to make a change.”

Chris Matthews Accuses Rush Limbaugh 'Stirring the Pot on Race' in Haiti Disaster

Examination Before Almighty God Allah

Now, counting 80 years from the date of his departure (1934) plus 80, equals another 80-year period to behem_archive3.jpg reckoned with which is mentioned in Lesson No. 2, Question and Answer 1 that begins with the Question: “Who made the Holy Qur'an or Bible ...” This particular lesson describes our Asiatic Calendar History and adds 80 years into the future of our calendar time, which expires in the year 9,000 from the time of the writing of this Lesson (1933) plus 80 equals 2013. We will also note that the numbers 80 and 34 equals 114, the complete number of chapters of the Holy Qur'an. The test for Believers and the New Converts to the Nation of Islam appears predominantly in Paragraph Number 2, which gives us an assessment of the two areas in which we are currently being tested during this period of 34 years after the departure of the Honorable Elijah Muhammad in 1975. The Honorable Minister Louis Farrakhan brought these two key areas in which we would all be tested in a 1979 Laborers' Meeting in Chicago, Illinois. He wrote these two test areas on the blackboard. One of these areas was whether or not we believed the Honorable Elijah Muhammad had escaped a death plot and lived. The second area would be on the Domestic Life of the Honorable Elijah Muhammad which has extended into his own history during this period of his Ministry as the Great Helper of the Honorable Elijah Muhammad.  Read more...

Haiti earthquake: Televangelist Pat Robertson links quake to 'pact with the devil'

By Andrew Zajac

Conservative televangelist the Rev. Pat Robertson on Wednesday linked the earthquake in Haiti to a "pact with the devil" purportedly entered into by the Haitian people in the late 18th century in a bid to defeat French colonizers.
"Something happened a long time ago in Haiti, and people might not want to talk about it," Robertson said on his Christian Broadcasting Network show. "They were under the heel of the French . . . and they got together and swore a pact to the devil. They said, 'We will serve you if you'll get us free from the French.'
"True story. And the devil said, 'OK, it's a deal,' " Robertson said. "Ever since, they have been cursed by one thing after another."  Read more...

Haiti Disaster Capitalism Alert: Stop Them Before They Shock Again

By Naomi Klein

Readers of the The Shock Doctrine know that the Heritage Foundation has been one of the leading advocates of exploiting disasters to push through their unpopular pro-corporate policies. From this document, they're at it again, not even waiting one day to use the devastating earthquake in Haiti to push for their so-called reforms. The following quote was hastily yanked by the Heritage Foundation and replaced with a more diplomatic quote, but their first instinct is revealing:

"In addition to providing immediate humanitarian assistance, the U.S. response to the tragic earthquake in Haiti earthquake offers opportunities to re-shape Haiti’s long-dysfunctional government and economy as well as to improve the public image of the United States in the region."

Egypt: New Find Shows Slaves Didn't Build Pyramids

KATARINA KRATOVAC

Egypt displayed on Monday newly discovered tombs more than 4,000 years old and said they belonged to people who worked on the Great Pyramids of Giza, presenting the discovery as more evidence that slaves did not build the ancient monuments.

The series of modest nine-foot-deep shafts held a dozen skeletons of pyramid builders, perfectly preserved by dry desert sand along with jars that once contained beer and bread meant for the workers' afterlife.

The mud-brick tombs were uncovered last week in the backyard of the Giza pyramids, stretching beyond a burial site first discovered in the 1990s and dating to the 4th Dynasty (2575 B.C. to 2467 B.C.), when the great pyramids were built on the fringes of present-day Cairo.   Read more...

Can sex offenders be held after serving criminal sentences?

By Bill Mears
Martin Andrews was 13 when he was abducted by a sexual predator and held for eight days. Then, in 1990, Washington state became the first to pass an innovative civil commitment law specifically for violent sex offenders. California, Wisconsin and New York, among others, later followed. Such "predator laws" focused on risk assessment and prevention of re-offending. It is a concept that the general public may not be aware exists.

The Supreme Court has upheld the use of such laws when the individual goal is rehabilitation, not further "punishment." But it has another, broader purpose.

"The primary goal is incapacitation, that is, protecting society from people who are predicted to be dangerous in the future," said Eric Janus, author of "Failure to Protect" and dean at William Mitchell College of Law in St. Paul, Minnesota. "The second goal is to provide treatment to these individuals."

Black Teenage Males Crushed By Unemployment

Jobs by Sam Sanders

More than half of black males between the ages of 16 and 19 are unemployed, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. And that's only counting those seeking work. Economists say legions of other young black men — nobody knows how many — have given up looking.

Sitting in an empty classroom at the YouthBuild Charter School in Washington, D.C., Andre Johnson, 18, talks about his fruitless job search.

"I apply for jobs every day," he says. "And usually I do it online, 'cause I know before when I used to go in the stores, they used to look at me actually different and weird, and they say, 'Oh we don't have no applications or nothing,' and I never believed them."  Read more…

Toxic metal found in kids' jewelry very dangerous

Danny Glover Sees No Difference Between Obama and Bush

“I think the Obama administration has followed the same playbook, to a large extent, almost verbatim, as the Bush administration. I don’t see anything different,” the activist movie actor said of Obama’s policies in Iraq, Afghanistan, and the Middle East. “On the domestic side, look here: What’s so clear is that this country from the outset is projecting the interests of wealth and property. Look at the bailout of Wall Street. Why not the bailout of Main Street?”

Use Of 'Negro' In 2010 Census Sparks Outrage

By STEPHANIE BARISH

The use of the word 'negro' on the 2010 census form is drawing ire from many people.

Question 9 on this year's consensus form reportedly asks about race, with one of the answers listed as "black," African-Am. or Negro."

The term, which was used most often during the 1960's, evokes memories of Jim Crow and segregation laws for many African Americans. Many critics say the word is outdated and offensive.

The form was given the green light by Congress more than one year ago and the word has reportedly appeared on past forms.  Read more...
