Scientists Find A DNA Change That Accounts For White Skin

By Rick Weiss

Scientists said yesterday that they have discovered a tiny genetic mutation that largely explains the first appearance of white skin in humans tens of thousands of years ago, a finding that helps solve one of biology's most enduring mysteries and illuminates one of humanity's greatest sources of strife.

The work suggests that the skin-whitening mutation occurred by chance in a single individual after the first human exodus from Africa, when all people were brown-skinned. That person's offspring apparently thrived as humans moved northward into what is now Europe, helping to give rise to the lightest of the
world's races. Read more...

In Gaza, Shortage of Basic Necessities Worse Than Threat of Death

Shane Bauer

While the death toll nears 800, with 3,300 injured, many are saying the shortages of basic necessities is starting to become worse than the constant threat of violent death.

The United Nations says 80 percent of people in Gaza are in urgent need of food aid.

The humanitarian situation is compounded by the fact that some 75 percent of Gaza is without electricity and 70 percent is without running water, UN figures say. Read more...

US Congressman calls for inquiry into illegal use of US weapons by Israel

by Saed Bannoura

After reports emerged from Gaza that Israel bombed a United Nations School on Tuesday, where people had sought refuge from Israeli military attacks, US Congressman Dennis Kucinich has called for an investigation into Israel's possible illegal use of US-supplied weapons.

The US is the single largest supplier of weapons to Israel, with over $3 billion in weapons transfers taking place each year. In addition to F16 fighter jets, guns, tanks and bombs, the US has also supplied Israel with tens of thousands of cluster bombs, weapons which have been declared illegal under international law. JEWS SPEAK OUT AGAINST GAZA MASSACRE! ISRAEL DOES NOT SPEAK FOR US!

In the past ten years alone, U.S. military aid to Israel was $17 billion; over the next decade, it will be $30 billion. As in Afghanistan and Iraq, it is U.S. aircraft, cluster bombs and bullets that kill and maim on behalf of the occupiers. As a result, violence is overwhelmingly one-sided against the Palestinians, who -- as an occupied people -- have no aircraft, artillery, tanks or ships. While rockets launched from Gaza since 2000 have killed 17 Israelis, Israel's modern arsenal has killed more than 400 Palestinians -- including many children -- since December 27 alone. We are against Israeli military occupation, for the right of Palestinian refugees to return, and for the elimination of apartheid throughout historic Palestine. Read more...

Farrakhan and antiSemitism on AlJazeera

The Honorable Louis Farrakhan explains, to Al Jazeera, how Zionist (NeoCon) forces use the label anti-Semite to stigmatize individuals who criticize Jewish and Israeli behavior that is abominable.

He points out that the Jews, who now occupy Palestine (now called Israel), are not Semitic, but Europeans that converted to Judaism.

He also points to the inordinate control the Jews have on what is reported in western media and how they use that control to manipulate the news and what is reported about the Middle East, Muslims and the Nation of Islam.

U.S. weapons deployed in conflicts around globe

By Ali Ghari

The United States “is the world’s largest arms supplier,” according to a new report from the New America Foundation.

That declaration was made in a climate of warnings of a Middle East arms race if Iran brings its alleged nuclear weapons program to fruition, while others fear that missile defense in Eastern Europe could spark escalation involving Russia. Read more...

Criticism of Israel clouds UN anti-racism conference

By Wolfgang Kerler

Meant to assess and accelerate progress on the implementation of anti-racism measures adopted at the somewhat infamous 2001 World Conference against Racism in Durban, South Africa, the Durban Review Conference will have to deal with renewed resentments among UN member states.

The Asian countries reminded all parties of what had happened seven years ago: In their contribution to a still-to-be-discussed draft declaration for the review conference, they called Israel’s policies toward Palestinians “a new kind of apartheid, a crime against humanity, (and) a form of genocide.” Read more...

How immoral can America be? A: Very!

By William Reed

As they cry crocodile tears over “cholera in Zimbabwe,” the U.S. and her European Union and Australian allies see their plot to remove Pres. Mugabe from power gaining momentum. Make no mistake about it, the decline and erosion of Mugabe is the result of financial sanctions imposed by the West. Draconian Western acts that devastated Zimbabwe’s socio-economic structure, not Mugabe, caused the flight of doctors, nurses and other key sector workers. Read more...

Viva Viagra: A new weapon in the war in Afghanistan

The Salt Lake Tribune

Pumping Afghanistan's tribal leaders for information about the Taliban is hard work. Fortunately, CIA operatives have a secret weapon -- Viagra.

Don't get the wrong idea. Our agents are engaged in bribery, not the bedroom. The pills, used to treat erectile dysfunction, are given to elderly tribal chieftains in an attempt to lift their, um, spirits.

At first, CIA spooks play the role of Pfizer misers, doling out just enough Viagra to prove its potency.

Then, like the proverbial schoolyard drug dealer, they come back in a few days, only this time, they want something in return for the little blue pills -- information and cooperation. Read more...

More Americans Getting Multiple Chronic Illnesses

Reuters

More Americans are burdened by chronic illnesses such as diabetes and high blood pressure, often having more than three at a time, and this has helped fuel a big rise in out-of-pocket medical expenses, a study released on Tuesday showed.

With prescription drugs playing a key role, average annual out-of-pocket medical costs -- those not covered by health insurance -- rose from $427 per American in 1996 to $741 in 2005, researchers wrote in the journal Health Affairs. Read more...

Mumbai Attacks in Context: A brief history of Western Intelligence Involvement in ‘Islamic’ Terrorism

Terrorism and the Illuminati

When the Americans sought to collapse the Soviet Union and bring a final end to the Cold War, they did not do it head on, but chose to bankrupt that nation by luring it into its own version of the Vietnam War–in Afghanistan. So said Zbigniew Brzezinski, who was Barack Obama’s national security advisor throughout his presidential campaign. Brzezinski has also admitted that the Americans deliberately fostered Islamic militants as part of that strategy.

This turned out to be the largest CIA operation in US history; Americans funded and supported the effort of Afghanistan’s Mujahideen, then ennobled by Reagan as ‘freedom-fighters’, and of course now maligned as ‘terrorists’. Read more...

Israeli Wiretappers, the NSA, and 9/11

(James Bamford has done another great deed for the public by revealing the extent of the NSA’s wiretapping on U.S. soil, and how the NSA sub-contracts the vast majority of its work to Israeli high-tech firms bristling with “former” Israeli military intelligence agents, and in the case of Verint, a company with serious corruption issues. It was Bamford who popularized the existence of Operation Northwoods in his 2001 book, Body of Secrets. In The Shadow Factory, he sheds light in the secret rooms of Verizon and AT&T, and shows the NSA to be a very poor custodian of the nation’s security.) Read more...

MARTHA WAGGONER

Unemployment is up so much in North Carolina that the state's Internet site for benefits crashed twice this week under a rush of claims.

Once the system was back up, the state set one-day records both for the amount of unemployment benefits paid and for the number of transactions, officials said Tuesday. Read more....

MALIK ZULU SHABAZZ'S Q&A WITH KAM WILLIAMS

The New Black Panthers head man takes Obama to task over Israel and Gaza and more.

"Right now, Obama is between a rock and a hard place. He pledged support to Israel in the election process; now he is in a position to get politically burned by that because Israel does not share his vision of reconciliation and justice. Ehud Barak, the defense minister of Israel and presidential candidate, is using Obama's previous statements as partial justifications for his current vicious and errant actions. So, as Israel continues to illegally pound and invade Gaza, we are not premature in calling on Obama to take the right position."

*Dr. Malik Zulu Shabazz is a freedom fighter/activist/attorney who has served as Chairman of the New Black Panther Party since 2001.

A familiar figure on the world stage today, he can frequently be caught effectively articulating his controversial point-of-view everywhere from Fox News to CNN to MSNBC to C-SPAN.

Reflective of the new leadership which has emerged from the Black liberation and Islamic movements, Dr. Shabazz is also the spokesman for the Black Lawyers for Justice. Read more...

Venezuela expels Israeli ambassador

Venezuela has expelled the Israeli ambassador to protest against the country's assault on Gaza, after the Venezuelan president described it as a "holocaust".

The move on Tuesday came hours after 40 Palestinians were killed at a UN school where civilians had taken shelter amid the offensive.

"The Holocaust, that is what is happening right now in Gaza," Hugo Chavez, the Venezuelan president, said in televised comments. Read more...

America's DTV Transition Beset with Problems

by Steve Macek and Mitchell Szczepanczyk

On February 17, 2009, all full-power analog television broadcasts in the United States will cease and existing TV stations will begin broadcasting exclusively in a digital format. The switch to digital television (DTV) will free up frequencies for emergency uses and allow broadcasters to provide more programming for their viewers through "multicasting."

As a practical matter, people will need to subscribe to a cable or satellite television service, use a digital-ready TV set, or hook up a digital converter box to an analog TV set, in order to continue watching broadcast television.

Unfortunately, the number of people who stand to lose their access to TV programming in the coming DTV transition is considerable. Read more...

Woman dies of bird flu in China

A 19-year-old woman who handled ducks in northern China has died in Beijing from bird flu, the World Health Organization said Wednesday.

The woman, Huang Yanqing, died Monday morning after she was admitted to hospital on December 27, according to state-run Xinhua news agency.

Huang had been in close contact with ducks at a market in Hebei Province, which neighbors Beijing, on December 19. She bought nine ducks from the market and cleaned the dead fowl before giving them to some relatives and friends, Xinhua reported. Read more...

The Long and Bloody Hypocrisy of U.S.-Israeli Acts of Terrorism

By Robert Parry, Consortium News

Israel, a nation that was born out of Zionist terrorism, has launched massive airstrikes against targets in Gaza using high-tech weapons produced by the United States, a country that often has aided and abetted terrorism by its client military forces, such as Chile’s Operation Condor and the Nicaraguan contras, and even today harbors right-wing Cuban terrorists implicated in blowing up a civilian airliner.

Yet, with that moral ambiguity excluded from the debate, the justification for the Israeli attacks, which have killed at least 364 people, is the righteous fight against “terrorism,” since Gaza is ruled by the militant Palestinian group, Hamas.

Hamas rose to power in January 2006 through Palestinian elections, which ironically the Bush administration had demanded. Read more...

Balance Of Power Swings To Liberal Legal Group

by Ari Shapiro

The past eight years were a good time to be in the Federalist Society. Members of that conservative legal group occupied every level of the Bush administration. Now that the Democrats are ascending, a different legal group is on the rise in Washington: the American Constitution Society.

"This is just a tremendous opportunity for us," says University of California Berkeley law professor Goodwin Liu. He's the new chairman of the board at ACS.

"Whereas I think in the last seven or eight years we had mostly been playing defense, in the sense of trying to prevent as many — in our view — bad things from happening, now we have the opportunity to actually get our ideas and the progressive vision of the Constitution and of law and policy into practice," Liu says.
